How to merge Excel files with different column orders
Teams often send the same table with different column orders. Pasting rows directly can put an employee ID under a name. FileDeck matches column headings before stacking the rows. This appends records; it does not join two tables side by side using an ID.
Worked example
The values below are fictional examples that illustrate the workflow.
Input and settings
File A: ID,Name,Team → 001,Alex,Planning File B: Team,ID,Name → Engineering,002,Sam
Expected result
ID | Name | Team 001 | Alex | Planning 002 | Sam | Engineering
Steps
- Open Merge spreadsheets and choose at least two XLSX, CSV, or TSV files.
- Choose the correct sheet in each file and check its header row. Different labels become different columns, so rename equivalent headers such as ID and Employee number in your originals first.
- Set the file order and enable source references if you need to trace each row back to its file, sheet, and row.
- Create the file and check column alignment in the preview. Download the result to review every row.
What to check
One selected sheet per file is merged. Empty rows are skipped; duplicate records are not removed automatically.
Output contains displayed values as text. Use another workflow if you need formulas, formatting, macros, or numeric cell types preserved.
Processing and saving
